Place on Pingree
This is a picture of a house that we are considering moving into on a permanent basis across the Lodge (highway) from our current neighborhood on Hazelwood and down a few streets. The CDC (central detroit christian community development corporation) owns it, and would be willing to rent it to us pretty cheap for the most part. It’s even bigger than the place we are living in right now, has just been remodeled… would be a really nice house for us to jump into.
However, there are a couple of issues that we are working through in addition to whether or not this neighborhood is right for us as opposed to Pastor Sewell’s. The neighborhood is rough, no doubt… there is a crackhouse on the block, which would significantly lower the price of our house. There’s always a risk of break-ins anywhere you go… so these are things to consider.
But also, this house stands out on the block because the CDC just renovated it. And being on an all African-American block, how would it look for 5 white people to move into the only really nice place? Yet, as Mark at the CDC said, “You will always have white privilige… how low do you want to go? Jesus went to death, he didn’t have a home… you have to pick some stopping point.” Good questions for us to wrestle with.
Last thing I’ll mention: us moving into this house actually would help the CDC out in a number of ways besides just the rent. In Detroit, it’s hard to renovate because people will break in when you aren’t at your property and steal whatever you just put in the house. So having people in the house really deters that, so in some sense we’d be doing the CDC and that block a favor by moving in.
We’ll see what God has in store for us. Pray for our decision, that God would guide it and put us in the center of His will.
